How often will Poppy Lane Mahjong Soirées be held?

Our Mahjong Soirées offer a dynamic and continually evolving experience. Each quarter, we will introduce a new atmosphere and carefully curated details to ensure every gathering feels unique, exciting, and inspired.

While these signature evenings will typically be held quarterly, additional soirées may be added throughout the quarter as interest and demand grow.

Each gathering will bring new opportunities to connect, celebrate, and enjoy the beauty of coming together around the table. We can’t wait to welcome you to each new chapter!

 

What happens if I purchase a ticket but can no longer attend?

We understand that plans can change, but because each soirée is carefully curated with intentional details, food, beverages, seating arrangements, and game tables prepared in advance, tickets are non-refundable.

 

If you find you are unable to attend, we encourage you to make someone’s day by sharing your seat at the table with a friend! Let us know your guest replacement's name so we can update our guest list.

What should I wear?

We invite guests to have a little fun with their attire if they'd like!

Think elevated, chic, and thoughtfully styled—but don't feel like you have to purchase something new or step outside your comfort zone.

No matter how you choose to dress—up or down—your style is always welcome. Our greatest hope is that you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to enjoy an evening of connection, laughter, and beautiful memories.

Do I need to know how to play Mahjong?

Not at all! We love welcoming both experienced players and those who are excited to learn something new.

​

For guests who are new to Mahjong, we will offer a beginner’s introduction one hour before the soirée begins.

It is designed for anyone wanting a quick refresher. In this approachable, hands-on session, you’ll learn the basics and essential rules, giving you the confidence to jump right into a beginning-level game and enjoy the evening from the very first round.

​How will tables and players be assigned?

During registration, you’ll select your current play level:

• Beginner — I know how to play and understand the basics.

• Intermediate — I can hold my own and enjoy a good game.

• Advanced — I’m ready to bring my A-game.

We will do our best to thoughtfully match players with others at a similar skill level to create a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Can I sit with my friends?

Absolutely! If you would like to be seated with a particular friend or group of friends, please include their names in the comments section during registration. As long as they have also registered, we will do our best to seat you together.

How does scoring work?

We won’t be playing for money, but we will be playing for fun and glory!

 

If you want to play just for fun, your table can choose to do so without keeping score. However, if you’re aiming for glory and a prize, your table must keep score and adhere to all National American Mahjong rules.​

What time should I arrive?

We encourage guests to arrive during the designated check-in and social hour so you have time to settle in, enjoy the atmosphere, connect with fellow guests, and take in all of the thoughtfully curated details before play begins.

​

We ask that guests arrive on time so everyone can enjoy a smooth and seamless experience. If you arrive after play has started, you may need to wait until your table begins its next game before joining.

 

To ensure the best experience for all guests, we reserve the right to adjust seating assignments if needed to accommodate open seats, table balance, or the overall flow of the evening.

What Mahjong rules will we be playing?

We will be playing American Mahjong using NMJL table rules for our events.

 

While playing with additional jokers, blanks, or house variations can be fun, we are keeping the rules consistent across all tables — especially when prizes and bragging rights are involved. A level playing field makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone!

 

We do have a few house etiquette rules we would love for all to follow, but the most important thing is that you have a fun and enjoyable experience.

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself and your desire to mingle, connect, laugh, and create a memorable evening. Your place at the table will be ready for you, including everything you need to play.

 

If you have your own 2026 NMJL Mahjong card you prefer to use, please feel free to bring it along. We understand… sometimes we get a little attached to our cards.

How will food and beverages be served?

Throughout the evening, we will offer a curated selection of small bites and beautifully crafted alcohol-free beverages for guests to enjoy. Rather than a traditional sit-down meal, think of the evening as dinner served over the course of the gathering, allowing you to savor each offering while continuing conversations and enjoying the game.
